IN a by-election on Thursday, August 13 caused by the death of Councillor Des Shadrick, local solicitor Pam Johns, standing as an independent, was elected with a majority of 66 to represent Holsworthy district on Torridge District Council.

The result was declared at 11pm in the Memorial Hall by the returning officer, John van de Laarschot. Mrs Johns received 537 votes and, representing the Liberal Democrats Mrs Vicky Spearman received 471. The turn-out was 31.8 per cent.

Having received a congratulatory hug from her opponent, Councillor Johns thanked former councillor John Allen for his guidance and her family for their support. She promised to do her best for Holsworthy.
