THE town council’s aspiration to see Holsworthy become the ‘Devon Poppy Town’ could be put into motion with the creation of a new working group.
On Wednesday, January 10, town councillors discussed whether plans could be made to create a town wide commemorative event that would see Holsworthy bedecked in poppies
Town clerk Vanessa Saunders put the idea forward to councillors to gauge their interest. She said: “It is 100 years since the end of the First World War and we want to make a big splash.
“The idea is to have poppies everywhere, on gates, in the square, etc. Whether they are ceramic, paper, cardboard or knitted etc, we want to have the town covered.”
She said they were hoping to get the local schools involved as well as other Holsworthy based organisations like the Royal British Legion and the museum team.
She said: “We want to set up a working group of councillors only to start with. They will eventually meet with other organisations to set up a coordinated group and get everyone together to organise something.”
The councillors agreed this was an ‘excellent’ idea and put themselves forward to join the working group to help get the ball rolling.
It was decided the working group would comprise Cllrs Jennifer Briggs, Michael Stanton, Joanne Heaven, Helen Parker and deputy mayor Colin Punter.
The end goal for the council is to see the town covered in poppies in time to commemorate the end of the First World War.
