UPPER Tamar Lake, near Bude, has been awarded its third consecutive Gold award for Green Tourism, as announced by the South West Lakes Trust.

The charity manages Tamar Lakes, balancing conservation with recreational enjoyment of the lakes as a visitor attraction.

The lakes offer visitors a tranquil retreat into the countryside, and a peaceful alternative to the busyness of the coast with a wealth of wildlife to discover, as well as bird hides located at both lakes.

There are many miles of relaxed walks, meandering through woodland and extending to the inland sections of the Bude Canal trails from Lower Tamar Lake, whilst Upper Tamar offers a level, three mile, circular multi-use path, suitable for walkers, buggies, wheelchair users and cyclists, enabling easy access to the great outdoors for all.

A scenic campsite and activity centre is also available, offering tuition, launch and equipment hire for kayaking, sailing and windsurfing, as well as more activities. Angling enthusiasts can also experience what the centre has to offer when fishing.

A recently-opened play area has been designed to provide a modern and interactive play area for children, of a wide age range and ability, and has been supported by Playquest Adventure Play.

The Green Tourism assessor said: “Management and monitoring remains strong through good onsite staff practices, as well as encouragement and resources from head office. The green message is communicated effectively onsite, with useful green displays and wildlife interpretation.

“The site has become a fantastic venue for low carbon activities – walking, cycling, canoeing, sailing, and more, while many events are held throughout the year. Much of these have helped raise funds for local charities.”
