TINTAGEL will not celebrate the usual Christmas lights event this year, but the village will not be without some Christmas spirit!

The parish council has taken it upon themselves to provide a Christmas tree in the square, decorating this area with some lights. This follows news that Tintagel would be having ‘no Christmas lights’ this year after an electrician did not come forward to help.

However, things are in hand for next year’s Christmas lights event, with organiser Elaine Flew telling the Post that everything is sorted for the 2018 event, from the electrician to the entertainment from a band.

Although it is disappointing for the lighting committee to be unable to host the usual festive event, which would have taken place on Saturday, December 2, Elaine explained that they are happy with the outcome and that Tintagel will not be without some Christmas spirit.

She said: “We are pleased to say that everything is on board for next year!”

The committee — consisting of just Elaine and Landa Miller — are now inviting local people to help out with next year’s event, after seeing people’s reactions to the prospect of Tintagel not having any Christmas lights this year. Elaine said: “Helpers are quite welcome. As they say, ‘put your money where your mouth is’.”

Elaine and committee partner, Landa, will not be directly involved with the putting up of the Christmas tree in the square, as this is a parish council project. However, the duo will be focusing on fundraising for next year’s lights.

Elaine said: “We’ll just be raising money for more lights now. People just think it’s a few bulbs — they don’t realise how expensive they are, and there’s only two of us doing all of this and organising it.”

Speaking about this year’s situation, she continued: “We’re very, very disappointed, but if people had come forward before, we could have done it all by now together. The parish council even pleaded and put tenders out. No one came forward.

“But it’s all organised for next year. We shall carry on and do just the same as we have in previous years. It was unfortunate that there was no electrician this year, but the person from the parish council who is doing it (involved in the Christmas tree in the square) wants to be greatly involved with Landa and I next year. Hopefully, something good will come out of this.”

Elaine added: “We have plodded on, but Tintagel won’t be without lights. We just won’t have all the things that we normally have.”
