CREAM tea surprises were delivered around the town as Callington Lions staged a virtual Honey Fair event.
Lions’ president Jamie Dowdall said that it had been hoped the fair could be back to its usual street market, fun fair, entertainment and competitions this year, but with the current COVID-19 restrictions it was agreed that it needed to be a virtual affair for at least one more year.
He explained that it is normally held on the one day, the first Wednesday in October, but, being virtual, it was extended over all the week.
Honey Fair co-ordinator, Lion Hayley Patton, had arranged many online events for the week.
She added that thanks to the generosity of many local firms a good selection of prizes were offered for a raffle — tickets were obtained by making a donation on to the JustGiving web site.
The prizes and prize winners can be seen on Callington Lions Facebook page www.facebook.com/CallingtonLionsNews
In addition, one event that proved popular were Lions’ cream teas. These could be ordered online for delivery to the door — many were booked as a surprise for friends and relatives.
The school painting competition had more than 400 entries many of which, including the winners, can be seen on Callington Lions’ Facebook page.
Money raised will go to Lions local charities such as the Food Bank, Air Ambulance, wheelchair provision and many more.
Lion Ken Aspinall, who arranged the school art competition said the standard of art work had been high and difficult to judge with 450 entries. The winning schools were: 1, St Mellion; 2, Callington Primary; 3, Pensilva.
Each school was presented with a prize cheque.
He added that St Mellion, one of the smallest schools in the catchment area, had provided a wide variety of paintings all on the festival theme.
President Jamie said he was looking forward to next year when Callington Lions hope they can be back with the street market and all the community events.
He added: “We are a local community-based volunteer group and would invite anyone to contact us if they need our help or if they would like to offer us support.
“So, if you would like to join us have some fun whilst helping the community, please see our website www.callingtonlions.org.uk/getinvolved.html or telephone 0845 833 7527.”
