Some shows might be bigger, some may have a longer pedigree but it is doubtful if a Show Committee could have been more relieved about the weather than at Ashwater.

Following an absence of two years through the combination of the elements and Foot and Mouth the 58th Show was opened by this year's President Mr Mike Priest who arrived in style in a carriage and pair.

Events began at 9.30am with the Ridden Horses, Ponies, Novelty Classes and Showjumping. Livestock including a variety of cattle and sheep classes were well represented. Particularly pleasing was the appearance of Devon Long Wool Sheep reviving a traditional

showing of this old breed as well as the young handlers with their immaculate turnout.

Throughout the day the main arena continued in use with a parade of the South Tetcott Hounds and a fine Gymkhana. Sideshows included many trade stands, produce and sweet stalls, bric-a-brac, a falconry display, ferret racing and companion dog show. The children were entertained by Mr Showers the Clown and expended plenty of energy on the bouncy castle.

The day concluded with a sheep shearing competition followed by the traditional games of skittles until late into the night.

Thanks are due to Mr Bryan Lewens for use of the fields at The Barton, the various sponsors of the catalogue, all who entered the show classes and of course everyone who turned out on the day.

Through the tenacity of Show Chairman, Eric Burnill and the organising abilities of Show Secretary, Jodi Richards backed by a stalwart Committee the event was a great success and a welcome return after the previously enforced absence.
