A SHORT mat bowling club has received a Big Lottery Fund grant for more than £5,000, which has been used to buy new equipment.

The Friday Club, which meets at Halwill Village Hall, applied for a grant in order to purchase an electric triple mat winder under the project title of 'Saving the Friday Club from Closing' — a community-based project.

Last October the club was awarded a grant of £5,810 from the Big Lottery Fund's small grants section, and has purchased the equipment, called an Electrowind Trident.

The Friday Club was formed more than ten years ago and is run on Fridays from 2pm to 5pm.

The club has 24 members, its maximum number, with one on the waiting list. They are mostly, but not all, pensioners who meet to play bowls and socialise.
