BOOKINGS are now open for Swim Safe, the free programme of outdoor swimming and water safety sessions for children, which will be returning to Bude this summer.
The sessions, taking place from Tuesdays to Thursdays between July 26 and August 25, will be held in Bude for its fourth year this summer.
The project has taught almost 4,500 children how to stay safe in and near open water through the use of practical, interactive, educational and fun sessions, including a land-based safety lesson with a lifeguard, followed by in-water tuition with a swimming teacher.
Wetsuits, swimming hats and a free goody bag with a t-shirt are all provided.
Delivered in partnership between the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and the RNLI charity, Swim Safe is perfect for families living in or visiting the area this summer, and will take place at Summerleaze beach and Bude Sea Pool.
Last year, RNLI lifeguards aided 2,213 people on beaches across North Devon and Cornwall, saving nine lives.
Whilst most of these incidents were minor, it’s important to remember that being around the sea is a very different environment to that of an indoor swimming pool.
Bill Williams, the site co-ordinator for Swim Safe at Bude, said: “There are all sorts of environmental factors to consider when you’re swimming in the sea, and it’s important that children know how to call for help if they get into trouble.
“We’re really looking forward to running Swim Safe again in Bude this year. Since 2013, we’ve seen the popularity for the programme grow and grow, and this year we’ve got enough spaces for 1,500 young people to come and learn some really important life skills.”
Swim Safe is a growing programme that is also taking place at several other locations across England and Wales this summer.
Parents can book their children onto a Swim Safe session in advance at www.Swimming.org/SwimSafe or can simply come along on the day.
