SUPPORT is growing at Cornwall Council for a stage of The Tour Of Britain professional cycling race to come to Cornwall in 2020.

Helston councillor, Dave Potter, is leading the campaign, and at a recent meeting of Cornwall Council in Truro a motion was put forward asking for a feasibility study costing about £4,000.

Liberal Democrat Cornwall Councillor for Bude, Nigel Pearce, supports the motion and said: “Most of the money will come from the private sector with just a little from the council to get the wheels rolling.

“I watched the race in Bude (Flexbury) in the 1990s and I believe that our young people will be encouraged to cycle and burn lots of calories instead of watching computers.

“Our great professional cyclists, Mark Cavendish Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins, all say they were inspired by watching races like this in their youth.”

Councillors Rich and Martin proposed the motion but it was decided by the chairman of Cornwall Council, Cllr Mary May, for the motion to be referred to the overview and scrutiny committee because it had a small financial implication.

Cllr Pearce added: “The aerial views of Cornwall and television coverage will be excellent for tourism so we will see a big return on investment.

“I also believe we should do everything to inspire our young people to lead healthy and active lifestyles.

“I know it is warmly supported by councillors and I hope we can get this motion passed at the council soon.”
