A GREAT lover of seals, Sue Sayer is an internationally renowned researcher who has spent thousands of hours observing them in the wild.

She will be holding an illustrated talk, organised by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust Bude Group, entitled ‘Surprising seal secrets’ at the Parkhouse Centre in Bude on Monday, January 18.

Scientists see grey seals as a homogeneous species — but to Sue each one looks different, has a unique personality, range of habits and migration route around the Celtic Sea.

She commits each unique fur pattern to memory, so that she can recognise the same seal another time.

She says that effectively to conserve seals we need to understand their individual traits and start to build up seal demographics in order to work out what is needed to protect them.

Anyone wanting to learn more or hear Sue speak on what needs to be done to help protect seal populations can attend her presentation at the Parkhouse Centre on Monday, January 18, at 7.30pm. £3 entry fee to include tea/coffee.
