THERE are currently 60 Ukrainian families now living in Launceston and North Cornwall, refugees from the Russian assault on Ukraine, and these lovely people were invited, with many others, to a special party hosted by Launceston Refugee Support Group in Launceston Town Hall.

Monday, December 19, marked St Nicholas’ Day to Eastern Christian countries, including Ukraine.

More than 120 people attended a happy and friendly event, made possible by the generosity of Launceston Town Council, the Mayor Cllr Leighton Penhale and Launceston Rotary.

Food was bought and donated, some Ukrainian, some Cornish, mulled wine was served and the celebrations began.

An address and blessing from a local priest explained the significance of St Nicholas to Ukrainian people, setting a serious tone to the celebrations.

Very soon however, entertainment and happiness took over, and children and adults alike enjoyed good food, drink, and friendship in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere.

‘Punch and Judy’ entertained the small children, a busy table saw many children decorating home made biscuits, while adults visited the bar, and sat chatting with friends old and new. Visitors from different local towns involved with collecting and transporting aid to Ukraine discussed coordinating plans for the new year.

Speaking on behalf of Launceston Refugee Support Group Bill Glen told the Post: “The absolute highlight of the evening however, was the appearance of St Nicholas.

“Dressed in gold robes, sporting an impressive white beard and holding a gold crozier, our visitor spoke only Ukrainian to the many children and parents who gathered round.

“A magical 15 minutes unfolded as St Nicholas spoke commandingly, welcomed all, led a happy dance, and with help from his ‘elves’ distributed carefully wrapped presents to all the children.

“Everyone watching was enchanted by this serious, mysterious and fascinating tableau; it was a privilege to watch.

“A camera crew from BBC Spotlight arrived to interview several guests, to take footage and to put together a comprehensive piece which was shown on all of their TV bulletins the following day.

“Thanks were given throughout the evening to all who had contributed to a wonderful event; volunteers from Launceston Refugee Support Group, bar staff from Firebrand, Launceston Rotary and Launceston Town Council, but the greatest thanks go to Sharon Greathead, a trustee of Launceston Refugee Support Group, who masterminded the event and pulled it off with great aplomb.”

Since the event there have been many expressions of thanks from, among others, the Ukrainian guests including: “It was so nice, like we were in Ukraine for the evening,” “Slava danced all night, we didn’t expect her to do that,” “You are incredible, you did so much for Ukraine children to feel the magic,” “The world is a happier place with people like you in it,” “It made me glad to see happy smiling faces,” “Thank you for the holiday for our children, they remained in complete delight,” “The atmosphere was definitely successful” and “We were immersed in the atmosphere of your love and care.”
