YET again Holsworthy Carnival committee pulled out all the stops to create another spectacular display of local creativity on Saturday.

There were various floats with creative themes, from ‘The Mad Hatters Tea Party’ to ‘Aladdin’, and all involved had a good time.

A committee spokesperson said: “The carnival went very well. I have never seen so many floats or people watching — despite the weather which wasn’t great (as always it would seem).

“The standard of some of the floats was truly amazing as well.”

This year’s carnival royalty were ‘Carnival Queen’ Lara Dullam-Devlin and ‘Fairy Queen’ Ruby Stephens. They did an excellent job representing their home town. The ‘Best Carnival Royalty’ prize went to Hatherleigh’s ‘Prince’ and ‘Princess’ Harry Winearks and Zoe Wonnacott.

Another part of the carnival week is the ‘Spot the Deliberate Mistake’ competition and the window dressing competition.

For the window dressing competition, the judges came over from Bude on the Tuesday before carnival, November 14, and judged all the displays. On the morning of Wednesday, November 15, Lions’ president Peter Brown and carnival committee member Lyn Fursdon delivered the good news to everyone who had been successful.

The overall winner of the window dressing competition was Andrea Furmage of Floral Designs. She received the shield and a prize. In second place was GSD 2000, who received a certificate of ‘Highly Commended’. In joint third place were Affordable Foods and Thomas Westcott Accountants, who the judges also felt worthy of a ‘Highly Commended’ certificate.

The ‘Spot the Deliberate Mistake’ competition was open until close of business on Monday, November 20.

Mayor of Holsworthy Jon Hutchings said: “We had a really good turnout and support was amazing for this year’s carnival. The weather held off which was great and I have to congratulate the carnival committee for doing such an excellent job.

“I want to also thank every one that took part and really helped to make this year’s carnival an excellent event. I wouldn’t say we had more entries this year but we certainly had much bigger support for this year’s carnival.

“The next event for Holsworthy is our Christmas lights switch on and Christmas market event. It will take place on December 1.”
