RESIDENTS living close to a school in Launceston are still waiting for speed bumps to be installed and a 20mph speed limit to be imposed now the new term has started.

In an email sent in June, a Cormac representative responded to some concerned councillors, school staff and residents and said he was ‘hopeful’ that traffic calming measures on St Stephen’s Hill would be in place before schools started again in September.

Children can attend St Joseph’s School from the age of three in the nursery, from ages three to 11 in the junior school and 11 to 16 in the senior school.

Headteacher at St Joseph’s Oliver Scott, said: “We would be delighted were Cornwall Council to stand by their previous pledge to install traffic calming measures on St Stephen’s Hill.

“The safety of our pupils is paramount, and any measure to slow the traffic that passes up the hill would greatly help.

“We are one of very few primary age schools in Cornwall where there are no restrictions on traffic speed outside the school, and this is an accident waiting to happen.

“We share the concerns of the residents, and urge the council to act sooner rather than later to safeguard the children.”

Town councillor and resident John Conway told the Post the traffic calming measures had originally meant to be in place by the end of March.

He said: “We are concerned — traffic does go speeding up the hill. It’s unsafe.

“They have promised it. Where are they? If this had been in Camborne or Redruth it would have been immediate.”

“Two other things I’m campaigning on are for ‘zig-zag’ lines outside of schools to be made legal — they are just a bit of paint on the road that means nothing, and a 7.5 tonne weight limit up the hill. Those two things are for the future.”
