HOLSWORTHY Town Council is looking to take on a new list of projects, having had a successful year tackling some pretty large events and building projects.

The council deferred the decision of which projects to take on from the previous meeting as very few had been suggested.

The town clerk, Vanessa Saunders, provided the councillors with a list of last year’s projects to see what could be carried forward and whether the councillors had any new suggestions.

She said: “A list of last year’s projects was given out, some have been done but we need to look at what we can feasibly take on next year.”

Mayor Jon Hutchings reminded councillors that after May elections next year a new council would be the ones to take on these projects.

He said: “We need to be aware there will be a new council next year. I think, sensibly, we should aim to get all projects on the list done in the next six months.”

Cllr Ken Watson had a few suggestions to add to the list. He said: “What about signage around the town, not the green ones done by Cllr [Ian] Parker [Torridge District Council], but the ones owned by Devon County Council? They are in a poor state and if we offered to pay for them, will they update them?

“Second, the park doesn’t have a toilet.”

Deputy mayor Cllr Colin Punter said he had been looking into a toilet for the park and that there were several different options available but each had aspects that needed considering.

He said: “There are different methods of cleaning the toilets, which would have to be considered. Chemical toilets would require regular visits from a specialist and traditional plumbed toilets would cost more for installation. All costs need to be considered, but this something we are looking into.”

Cllr Watson asked whether the newly built Pavilion could be extended to include a public toilet facility as there was already a water supply available.

Cllr Hutchings said the council hadn’t considered this as it was looking to site a toilet at the opposite end of the park.

Cllr John Allen suggested an easily achieved project for the town council would be to tidy up the signage around Holsworthy, which he said had begun to look ‘tatty’.

“We should spend a bit of time getting the town to look nice.”

Cllr Watson asked whether this could extend to tidying up the pathways around the park. The town clerk said that type of project would cost thousands of pounds to complete but was something she was willing to look into.

The list of suggested projects will be reviewed and they will aim to complete them before May.
