THE 62nd Tetcott and Luffincott horticultural show was opened by president Mr Michael Axford on August 5.
Entries were up this year despite the bad weather which had affected everyone’s garden produce.
The vegetable section saw a good lot of entries from people new to showing which is great to see but in the end the cup for most points and onion classes were won by Steve Mitchell with the runner up cup going to Jim Rooke and the cup for best in section won by Adele Jones with her tomatoes.
The flower section saw Myrtle Rooke win the cup for most points as well as the best pansy cup and best in section cup for her vases of mixed flowers; she also shares the Dahlia cup with Nicky Mitchell. The best rose cup was won by Anne Mitchell who is another exhibitor new to the show.
Cups in the floral art section were won by Alice and Heather Merritt with some beautiful arrangements, well done also to Mary Barriball for having a go in this section this year.
A new class for this year was best silage, exhibits were kept outside the hall due to the aroma they were giving off, and this section was won by Johnny Britton.
The children’s section was well supported with great vegetable animals, Lego models and decorated eggs as well as much more including exhibits from Clawton Preschool.
The section was jointly won by Nathan and Tia Graham with Jamie Knight runner up, Nathan also won the cup for best exhibit with his Lego model.
The cookery section left the judges feeling very full with so much lovely produce for them to taste and drink, the cup for most points was won by Jo Barriball and Alice Merritt won best preserve with her jam, the cup for best exhibit by a male cook was won by Tom Merritt.
The handicraft section saw a very varied selection of crafts and the most points cup went to Jonthan Pearce.
The shield for clay pigeon shooting was won later in the day by Gareth Mitchell scoring 9 out of 10.
A pet show was held in the afternoon but was only attended by two pets. It was a hard decision but the judge eventually gave 1st to Jamie Knight and Douglas the dog and second to Marley Masolo with his talented snail.
A social was held in the evening with Mike Greenaway showing his new skills as a bingo caller and the children gave an impromptu talent show to give Mike chance to catch his breath.
Profits from last year’s show meant they could give £100 each to Devon Air Ambulance, North Devon Hospice and Tarka Hospital Radio as well as £50 to Clawton preschool. It is hoped they will be able to give to similar charities this year.
Nicky Mitchell, secretary, said: “Thank you to all who helped run the show as well as the judges, exhibitors and those who came to see the show or support it in any way. It is so important to keep village shows, not only ours but in every village going, not only to raise money for charity but it is a great way of getting the village together and keeping a community spirit alive, so do keep supporting them and why not have a go at showing.
“We were all new to showing produce once and in my experience there is always someone there willing to give you help and advice on how to polish your potatoes etc if you need it.”
