CANINE Partners, a charity that partners specially trained assistance dogs with people who have disabilities, was supported by a dog show at Brooks Garden Centre, Stratton, on Saturday, September 30.

Forty dogs took part in the show, organised by the Wyevale garden centre in conjunction with one of its concessions, Pets Corner. It was judged by Tamar Vets, and raised £45.

Jackie Hill, plant area manager, said: “We wanted to do an autumn event. It’s a good time for planting plants and it’s nice to do a few extra attractions. We get a lot of people in with their dogs, and a dog show was by far the most popular idea among our customers.”

There were also craft stalls and face painting for children.

Canine Partners receives no government funding and relies solely on donations from the public and legacies. The dogs are trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening and closing doors, unloading the washing machine, picking up dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and fetching help in an emergency. They can even help people to get undressed and remove a card from an ATM!
