HEN welfare charity the British Hen Welfare Trust (BHWT) has launched an urgent appeal to find homes for 600 ex-commercial laying hens in the Camelford area.
The lucky hens were saved from slaughter over the weekend and are now being given a second chance at life thanks to the BHWT re-homing initiative. They are being cared for by Michelle Ward, local co-ordinator, who is hoping the appeal will encourage kind-hearted members of the public to step forward and offer a permanent home to a few of these hens.
Michelle said: “We have been given a wonderful opportunity to save hundreds of hardworking hens from slaughter, and are now in a race against time to find them all homes before the weekend.
“Our hens make fantastic pets, they are simple to keep, and you’ll quickly discover there is a whole lot more going on under those feathers than you’d think. Ex-bats are well known for their inquisitive and mischievous characters, and would make a worthwhile addition to any back garden.”
The hens are available for collection immediately, so if you have ever wanted to keep a few backyard hens, and think you and your family would enjoy a supply of fresh laid eggs, then get in touch with the charity on 01884 860084 or email [email protected]
