A SCHEME to protect a village's gravestones has received over £4,000 towards saving them.

Pyworthy Local History Group has recently received £4,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to help members undertake their project to index the gravestones in Pyworthy parish churchyard.

Led by volunteers from the local community, the project focuses on the important data contained on the hundreds of memorial stones in the churchyard, some of them dating back to the early 1700s.

Some of the very old stones are suffering from erosion and in the not too distant future it may become impossible to read them.
