SAINSBURY’S Bude organised a bake sale and cycled 136 miles in store on December 16, and, thanks to the generosity of the people who visited them in store and the hard work of the Sainsbury’s staff, £509.11 was raised for young lives versus cancer.
CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading provider of support for young cancer patients under the age of 25 and their families.
When cancer strikes young lives, CLIC Sargent helps families limit the damage cancer causes beyond their health. Cancer affects every part of life, for the young person and their families — relationships, confidence, money, school and work. CLIC Sargent care teams will fight tirelessly to minimise the damage it causes.
They cycled 136 miles on a static bike, as this is the distance between Sainsbury’s and the closest children’s specialist centre, where young people from Bude will have to go to receive treatment for cancer.
CLIC Sargent fundraising engagement manager for Cornwall and Devon, Jordan Anderton, said: “They did a brilliant job on the day and the people of Bude were so generous. Cycling 136 miles in store was such a great idea as it demonstrated how far families have to go to receive care for their child and why CLIC Sargent is so important.
“I would like to thank Sainsbury’s Bude and their customers for their generosity. The money that was raised on the day will truly make a difference to young cancer patients.”
The money raised could fund a room in one of CLIC Sargent’s Homes from Home for just over two weeks. For some families in Bude, these homes are vitally important. Their journey would have started with a trip to the closest specialist centre, for diagnosis and treatment, with an average stay of 25 days, miles from home, friends and family.
These Homes from Homes are havens for patients and families during treatment, alleviating the financial cost of paying for alternative accommodation and allowing families to stay together during the toughest times, minimising any further emotional strain. This can only be done thanks to support shown by the public.
Stephen Gent, store manager at Sainsbury’s Bude, said: “We would like to thank our customers for helping us to raise so much money for our charity of the year, CLIC Sargent.
“We really enjoyed welcoming all of the volunteers into the store over the weekend and we hope our support will really make a difference to CLIC Sargent.”
