Members of the public want to improve road safety around Clawton primary school.

Local people have started a petition asking for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on the A388 next to Clawton primary school. The pedestrian crossing would allow safe crossings to the primary school for both the children and local residents.

The idea of a crossing would have an added benefit to slowing down the traffic on the main road. There is already a safe pedestrian crossing at the school, the idea is to combine the two to ensure that children don’t have to run the risk of entering through the car park or crossing the road.

The road is a 30-mph speed area; however, it is known that some drivers don’t always stick to the limit.

A spokesperson from the online petition said: “Although there are speed restrictions in place, drivers take no notice. The speeds they do coming down the hill is shocking. It’s only a matter of time before there is a serious accident. A crossing will hopefully slow the traffic and make it safer for the school children and residence.”

The petition has the support of the school and its governors, but the local residence wishes to take it to Devon County council. On March 24, the petition had 207 signatures supporting the move, if there is enough public demand for the project it is believed that the council will consider taking action.
