AS THE bank holiday weekend approaches, more of the most popular beaches will see the return of RNLI lifeguards. With more to be added to the list of those benefitting from RNLI patrols over the coming months, beach users are being urged to take heed of the safety signage and advice offered by the charity's lifeguards on duty this summer. In particular, beachgoers are advised to keep clear of the sheer sand cliffs which have been created by the winter storms, some of which are 10 to 15 feet high and in danger of collapsing on anyone under them. Of Cornwall's 163 beaches, the 26 owned by Cornwall Council and an additional 31 others will have a lifeguard service provided by the RNLI over the summer, with Cornwall Council contributing £1.3million to the charity's beach lifeguard service. Season dates vary from beach to beach depending on the number of users, with 18 of the most popular beaches being patrolled over the bank holiday weekend. Widemouth, Summerleaze, Bude and Polzeath beaches will have a lifeguard service from Saturday. For the full report, and a round-up of the local news and sport, see this week's edition of the Post.
