TWO stand up paddle boarders became stuck after heading straight out to sea and required the aid of Bude’s RNLI lifeboat service.

Someone at Efford, Bude, spotted the pair off Summerleaze Beach and they called in at 3.36pm last Friday after they lost sight of them.

At the lifeboat helm was Jez Brown with the crew Mark Palmer and Dean Thompson, who was attending his first service launch after completing his training.

The crew were fortunate to be going out in favourable weather with just a light offshore breeze and no swell. The paddle boarders were spotted half a mile off shore in good spirits but tired after trying to paddle back to shore for the previous 40 minutes — they gratefully accepted a lift back.

On returning to shore the boat was recovered by Jeff Weaver and the two paddle boarders were taken back to the station to recoup.

This rescue was the fourth callout for Bude lifeboat since Lifeboat Weekend in August and the third in a row to see a new crew-member attend their first service launch — although a relatively straightforward call-out it was good experience for new crew-member Dean under the guidance of Jez and Mark.
