AS RNLI lifeguards get ready for the upcoming season, eleven of Bude’s extended season lifeguards have been busy on their induction, preparing themselves for the Easter holidays.

Over the past two weeks, many passers by may have seen the trainees out on the beach and in the water, taking part in a number of training activities.

On the beach, they have been carrying out fitness testing and vehicle safety training, whilst in the sea, they have been perfecting their rescue techniques with some of the guards taking the rescue water craft and inshore rescue boat qualifications.

In the classroom, everyone has participated in the casualty care first aid course, making sure everyone is up to date with the most current safety protocols and treatments.

More recently, the beach lifeguard facility has had a good spring clean, whilst being prepped with all the necessary equipment needed for the season ahead.

Both Summerleaze and Widemouth beaches will be lifeguarded every day over the Easter holidays, from April 1 to April 17. They will then be lifeguarded again on the weekend of April 22 and 23 before going full-time from Saturday, April 29. Lifeguards will be on duty from 10am until 6pm, so for those planning a visit, ‘feel free to come and say hello’!

For those planning a visit to a lifeguarded beach over Easter, they should make sure they swim and body board between the red and yellow flags.

The sea is still very cold at this time of year, so ensuring a wetsuit is worn and checking the conditions before entering the water can make a big difference.

If someone is seen in trouble in the sea and there are no lifeguards on duty, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard. Do not enter the water — too many people drown trying to save others.
