A RETIRED couple from Langore, who did not want to be named, were recently surprised to find that a pane of glass in their summerhouse had been broken by what is suspected to be a bullet or pellet, writes Zoë Uglow.
The summerhouse is at the bottom of the couple’s garden and they raised concerns over their safety and the safety of others after they found a spent ‘bullet’ among shards and splinters of broken glass.
The couple sent images of the ‘bullet’ to a family member who believes it could have been from a .22 rim-fire rifle — but police could not confirm this.
The position and angle of entry indicated that any shot that may have been fired near the property came directly through the leafy hedge, which borders the property.
This raised concern for the couple as they spend a lot of time out in their garden and in the summerhouse.
They said: “We just want to make people aware that had anyone been in that part of the garden or in the summerhouse at the time, the outcome could have been quite different.”
“This incident has been investigated, as it is known that people had been shooting rabbits nearby; but no answers have come forth to help solve the mystery of how a bullet came to be there causing such damage.”
The couple said that they wish to speak out about their experience in order to reinforce the message that all firearms can be dangerous if used irresponsibly.
They added: “In this case, a leafy hedge was not sufficient backstop for a bullet shot at such velocity, and anyone holding a gun license should know this.”
