THE anniversary of an historic Civil War battle was celebrated over the weekend.

The Battle of Stratton, a major battle of the English Civil War in 1643, was re-enacted as it has been done over the years with The Sealed Knot telling the story of The Battle of Stamford Hill.

Reaching the town first on May 15, 1643, the Earl of Stamford had deployed his troops on the summit of what is a substantial hill to the north of the Stratton, which still bears his name.

Away from the battlefield to Bude Castle, the Living History Camp gave a flavour of life in the 17th century on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors could experience a tented 'village' portraying a variety of professions, crafts, cookery skills and various 'characters' giving the public the chance to get up close and interact with the re-enacters.
