A TWO-YEAR labour of artistic love by the Inney Crafters has created a colourful quilt to help raise funds for the church at?Laneast.

a storm the winter before last damaged a stained glass window, depicting Christ on the cross, at the 15th century church.

The parochial church council estimated £76,000 was needed for the completion of repairs — and the community rose to the challenge with a variety of fundraising events.

The latest is a craft and gift event, which focuses on the creative skills of the community.

As a contribution to it The Friends of Laneast Church were delighted to have received a hand-made quilt. It was completed in memory of Di Stephenson, who died earlier this year. She was a much-loved member of the community and initiated the quilt project.

Eight Inney crafters worked together to hand-craft the quilt — Jane Bullivant, Monica Ham, Kate Handford, Diana Maynard, Karen Ponting, Ann Sheldrake, Nita Holmes and Di Stephenson,

It took almost two years to quilt and the splendid result will be raffled to raise money at the craft and gift event at Altarnun Church Hall next week.

The event takes place from 10am to 5pm on Thursday, October 22 and from 9am to 4pm on Friday, October 23.

All proceeds will go towards the fund to repair the damage to the church window.

Other successful fundraising ventures for the church repairs included sales of ‘A Pane in the Glass’ a special ale, brewed by Penpont Brewery, and a Poldark-themed concert in July.

Mary Groves, of the Friends of Laneast Church, said: “It will be something a little bit different for the area and after the successful Poldark evening, which raised around £2,000, we are hoping we will get around the same from this event.”

Entry is free and the event will comprise more than 20 stalls featuring artisan crafts such as jewellery, ceramics and textiles with other stalls selling food and gifts. Coffee, cakes, light lunches and afternoon teas will be available.
