PUPILS from St Petroc’s School in Bude have again contributed to the local community effort to keep beaches clean by taking part in the Surfers Against Sewage Beach Clean on Wednesday, October 19.

Spurred on by a hugely generous donation of a free ice cream for each pupil from Rosie’s Kitchen, the children worked for an hour and picked up five large bags of rubbish between them.

One of the most refreshing aspects of the whole event was how children young and old got fully involved in the process.

Headmaster, Daniel Thornburn, said: “It has once again been a real privilege to be involved with the SAS Beach Clean series. The oceans and beaches will be inherited by our current pupils and so we can see the clear benefit from involving them from an early stage in their lives.”

One of the most noticeable elements of this term’s clean was the amount of waste believed to have come from fishermen.

A Year 6 girl said, with touching clarity: “Why are there so many little pieces of fishing net? ”

St Petroc’s is regularly involved in community events like this and has recently been shortlisted for the Independent Schools Association Community Award 2016.
