THE wheels are in motion in the campaign to make the A39 crossing in Stratton a safer place for pedestrians and road users.

It was reported in the Post on September 3 that campaigners had met North Cornwall Conservative MP Scott Mann to discuss and witness at first-hand the busy and consequently dangerous crossing on the A39, just outside Stratton Primary School.

The three women spearheading the campaign — Lisa Wood, Lucy Wilson and Vicky Jones — were concerned that children were going back to school with the road layout and island in the same state as it was when the they broke up for the summer.

Lucy said at the time: “There are a couple of issues with the area we’re campaigning about; one being the size of the island itself, and, two, the amount of traffic coming in different directions making crossing easy to misjudge.

“It’s a much bigger problem than simply replacing the island.”

Stratton School headteacher Phil Aldis also raised concerns about the safety of the road, describing the area as ‘a nightmare’, adding that he was amazed there had not been more accidents.

Following his visit to the site, Mr Mann promised worried parents he would do his utmost to keep momentum of the campaign going and get the answers they deserve.

Last Thursday, he released the following statement: “CORMAC are aware of the issues here and as a result have commissioned a study to look at potential options to improve pedestrian crossing facilities. The study is being undertaken to look at a number of potential options.

“The report is due back at the end of October 2015, at which point they will review its findings in liaison with stakeholders and decide on an approach to delivering a suitable solution.”

Lisa Wood said: “Myself, Lucy Wilson and Vicky Jones are very pleased that Scott Mann has taken the next step and made arrangements for a survey to be carried out at that particular part of the A39.

“We look forward to hearing the outcome of that survey and what proposals will be made after.

“We have set up a facebook page at www.facebook.com/strattonbudeA39junction to increase awareness and keep people informed about the progress of the campaign.

“So far, it’s a positive step forward and we need to keep momentum going.”
