WITH reference to the letter 'Tragedy of political correctness' (the 'Post', February 12), the writer is quite correct in assuming I have interpreted her offensive remarks as prejudiced, in what other way could one interpret them?
As to tax payers being asked to fund a minority group, has she stood on her soap box and complained about funding for all the other minority groups who often have no right to even be in this country but whose needs are frequently given priority, I think not! Neither is any minority group arriving in this country being asked to change their way of life.
Regarding the patronising remarks as to gipsies settled in Holsworthy adapting to today's society, how condescending is that?
Whether Derriton is suitable for a gipsy/traveller site remains to be seen, perhaps the protestors could come up with ideas for alternative sites.
Political correctness has I'm afraid become a fact of life for all of us. I find a lot of things happening in this country abhorrent to me, as I'm sure many others do, but I wouldn't dream of picking on one particular group to vent my anger on, maybe because I've grown up with prejudice from a certain element of the community all my life.
Also reference the letter 'fear of the known' (the 'Post', February 12) where Mr Gulliver managed to get his letter duplicated, I think he is making a very sweeping statement in his "a problem with rubbish building up to an unacceptable level and allegedly an increase in criminal activity." Isn't it amazing how suddenly we have so many experts on the ways of gipsies/travellers. I only have to look in and around Holsworthy to find just what he is describing within some of his own race.
I read in the papers every day of children of 13 and 15 producing children, rape, child abuse and drug abuse, which are virtually unheard of in my race but no mention is ever made of that.
I do know that an element of the population such as Mrs Dunbar and Mr Gulliver have preconceived ideas about gipsies/travellers that will never change. I do not therefore intend to continue to reply to their letters but will no doubt meet them at future meetings regarding the gipsy/traveller site where we will all have our say.
Holsworthy.
