THE Poughill Tea Dancers were delighted to be invited to St Anne’s residential home in Whitstone last week, to entertain residents and staff.

The tea dancers, which meet in Poughill Village Hall from 2pm onwards on Thursdays, enjoy showcasing their sequence and ballroom skills each week, as well as socialising.

The group, which is looking to increase its membership, was delighted that St Anne’s residential home staff read a piece about the tea dancers in the Bude and Stratton Post, and invited them along to perform on Friday, February 24.

Group organiser, Alan Fulford, said: “The people there said it was the best day they have had of someone entertaining them for yonks! They were really pleased and want us to go back again.”

The tea dancers put on their display and even the staff joined in.

Mr Fulford added: “We went there and did a lot of dances that we do at Poughill. They were singing along. I’ve never seen people smile so much. The staff came in and had fun with us. The residents like that. Overall it was brilliant.

“One of the staff went out and brought us some daffodils for making her happy.”

The group performs more than 25 dances weekly, including waltzes, tangos, mambos and line dances.

They would welcome new members of any age. Mr Fulford added: “It keeps people very active and helps the mind. We are fun and happy people and it’s a good social life. It’s all about enjoying yourself.

“It’s not Strictly Come Dancing. We all want to do good, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t!”

As well as the dancing, there are tea and biscuits available and the chance for a good chat afterwards. The afternoon costs £2.50 per person and all are encouraged to come along and give dancing a go.
