As revealed in the 'Post' last week, Bude General Post Office is to oversee the management of Week St Mary and Whitstone sub post offices, ensuring that the service remains in the two rural communities. The present sub postmasters Jeff Roberts at Week St Mary and Daniel Cock at Whitstone will continue to run their post offices on a daily basis, and Bude will oversee the management of the branches. Responding to the news, North Cornwall MP, Dan Rogerson said: "This is still a second-best outcome. Local people wanted to keep their Post Offices open with proper counters and the full range of services. Now, Dan and Kyla in Whitstone and Jeff in Week St Mary will be expected to keep the branches afloat, and services available for longer, without a salary. Indeed they could lose more money than they make. The Post Office is asking hard-pressed small businesses to subsidise a national concern, even though Royal Mail now makes a considerable profit. Residents will doubtless be relieved that they still have access to some Post Office services, but will rightly fear for their future if the arrangements do not prove sustainable for the shopkeepers. Now more than ever they will need the support of the community to keep their businesses going."
