PLANS are underway to erect a granite poppy memorial in Camelford to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the first world war. The idea was initially mooted at a meeting of the Camelford branch of the Royal British Legion, but Vaughan Williams, who is masterminding the project, said he wanted it to be community-focused. The 2ft 6in granite poppy will sit on a 10ft column, all carved from granite sourced from De Lank Quarry. Steve Kay, a local stonemason, will carve the sculpture and Mr Williams is hoping to organise a competition for schoolchildren to come up with a short poem, which will be engraved on the base of the memorial. The estimated cost for the project is £3,500 and help has already been offered by Camelford Town Council and Cornwall Council. Mr Williams is keen to keep the whole project local to the Camelford area and will approach a number of businesses for help.
