CAMELFORD has two new councillors, following the town’s local election last Thursday.
Ayla Ackroyd Johnson and Aaron Scawn are Camelford’s new town councillors, following an election involving three candidates.
A polling station at Clease Hall was open until 10pm, after which the votes were counted, and it was announced that 480 votes went to Cllr Scawn, while Cllr Ackroyd Johnson received 322.
Peter Guesford, the third candidate standing, did not gain a seat on the council, having received 180 votes.
At the age of 24, Cllr Ackroyd Johnson will be the youngest member of the town council, and was delighted with the result.
She said: “I am absolutely over the moon! I wasn’t expecting it, but I’m so pleased that people believe in me. My family and friends helped so much with my campaigning and I couldn’t thank them enough.
“I am hoping to bring the voice of all generations in and to evolve and improve our town to its best. I can’t wait to get stuck in and work hard for what this town and its residents need.”
Cllr Scawn, 35, who served on the council ten years ago, said he was delighted to have been voted back onto the council.
“I didn’t really do much campaigning in the lead-up to the election, but a lot of people came into the Co-op where I work and asked me about why I was standing.
“It is with great pride and a privilege that I think everyone who voted for me. I appreciate you all taking the time to vote and I will work hard to repay your faith in me.
“I very much look forward to being part of this council and all the projects it is involved in. I hope to use my links with the Co-op’s Community Pioneer scheme and the Town Trust to help make Camelford, Helstone and the neighbouring villages great places to live.”
Camelford Town Council said 646 ballot papers were issued with a turnout of 26.9%, out of an electorate area of 2,398.
