A COMMUNITY facility in Bodmin could be set for a small extension as it continues to help the young people of the town.

KBSK has applied to Cornwall Council seeking permission to extend its building, known as The Space.

The portion of the building which will be built had initially been intended to be part of the original scheme but had to be scaled back due to funding challenges.

However, with the demand for the services offered by The Space increasing, the community organisation’s management are seeking to build the extension which will be used for youth activities and potentially educational provision.

It would also be available for hire by other groups and will provide a valuable amenity for the Bodmin community.

Situ8, the planning agent working with KBSK on the application told Cornwall Council on behalf of the applicant: “The application seeks permission for a modest extension measuring approximately 54 sqm at the north-eastern end of the existing building. The extension would provide additional flexible youth and community floorspace.

“This would support the continued use of The Space for youth activities, including educational provision for children who are out of mainstream education or are home educated. The enlarged facility would also remain available for hire by local community groups and for community events.

“The additional floorspace would support the established social and community role of The Space by providing greater capacity for youth activities, educational provision and community use.”

It was also further elaborated on how the proposed extension would integrate itself into the current building.

The planning agent continued: “The extension has been designed as a simple continuation of the existing building. Its scale, form and external materials would match those of the recently constructed development, ensuring that it appears as a coherent and integrated addition rather than a separate structure.

“The proposal would represent a modest increase in the footprint of an established community facility and would not materially alter the overall character or appearance of the building or site.

“The existing access, parking and circulation arrangements serving The Space would remain unchanged. The proposal would not alter the principal means of access to the building. The extension would be incorporated into the existing facility and would maintain appropriate and inclusive access for its users.

“The proposal would provide a modest and sympathetic extension to an established youth and community centre. It would use materials matching the existing building, retain the established access arrangements and provide valuable additional space for youth education, activities and wider community use.
