PLANS for the extension of Launceston Leisure Centre for a new roof to create two storeys that will incorporate space for an extension to the gym and fitness classes is to be amended.

The Coronation Park Trust has submitted the planning application seeking Cornwall Council’s approval for its amended application, which will lower the roof of the café and the main building, change the windows design and the build schedule in addition to changing the approved cladding.

It would also split the project into four separate phases of work.

At the time of the original application in 2025, the applicant told Cornwall Council: “The Leisure Centre is under new management and the proposals are intended to increase the attractions of the Leisure Centre and hopefully bring it closer to profitability.

“It is a very popular destination but with limited facilities and, as has now come to light, with a flat roof that urgently requires replacement - the current proposal is intended to address this as approved with the provision of the cafe, an external - but covered - seating area and a new entrance and now with the provision of a first floor activity area together with the provision of the new pitched roof. Some internal layout changes will also be made to re-utilise space on the ground floor.

“The overall height of the main element of the Leisure Centre will increase in height but will be no higher than the existing, adjacent sports hall building. Materials will match existing other than for the roof which will be in profiled metal sheeting. Solar panels will be installed on the south facing roof plane.”

The plans were later approved, however, the new amended plans will now be decided by the council.

The applicant told Cornwall Council that the changes were necessary in order to reduce the build cost of the proposals.
