RAIL passengers travelling between Cornwall and Plymouth faced major disruption after a person was hit by a train on Saturday (September 12).

The incident happened on the line between Plymouth and Penzance, bringing rail services in and out of Cornwall to a halt.

Emergency services attended the scene and all lines were blocked while the incident was dealt with.

Great Western Railway (GWR) issued an update to passengers at around 4pm, warning that services could be cancelled, delayed or significantly altered.

The GWR statement read: “Due to the emergency services dealing with an incident between Plymouth and Penzance all lines are blocked.

“Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 6.30pm.

“A person has been struck by a train, leading to all lines being blocked. It is necessary to bring all trains in the affected area to an immediate stop.

“If you are onboard one of the services in this incident and have been affected by this incident or know someone else who needs support, there is always someone to talk to.

“Contact a Samaritan on 116 123 for free, any time, on any phone. Help is only a phone call away.”

Just before 6pm, GWR said Emergency services and Network Rail had concluded their investigations and reopened the line.
