Following the consultation meeting in early November, on the relocation of Holsworthy's livestock market, the findings from the questionnaires filled in by members of the public were on display at the livestock market and in the Memorial Hall last Wednesday (December 9).

There was overwhelming support (72 per cent) in favour of the move, 22 per cent gave qualified support and six per cent were opposed. Asked to what use the site of the current market should be put, the top answer was for retail development.

Just as well, as a financial viability analysis shows that an element of food retail will be needed to generate sufficiently high land value to provide funds for the relocation. The next top answers were to provide employment, an open space and residential development though some were concerned at the current lack of demand for more open market housing.

The next step is to produce a draft document by the early spring to put to Torridge District Council. Following a further six week period of consultation, it is expected it will be adopted by the council and a planning framework created for submission to developers.
