IN an effort to make savings of £110-million Devon County Council is proposing that its Youth Service will cease to be open to all young people and will target its support on those defined as 'most in need', writes Christine Williams.

Consequently it will no longer need to manage and run any of the current youth centres, leaving Holsworthy's Youth Centre in Sanders Lane in danger of being closed.

A number of youth service workers will have a new role working with the young people most in need of support, providing services such as mentoring, assessment, intervention and relationship-building.

It is hoped that the vast majority of young people who are not classed as 'most in need' will be catered for instead by local community groups, charities and private sector providers.

Understandably, those who currently attend Holsworthy Youth Centre, which has catered for the youth of the town since it was opened in May 1969, are dismayed at the prospect of its closure.
