Camelford schoolgirl Lauren Sandercock will return to school on Monday following a two week ban for wearing a tongue stud. “The fight will go on, though,” vowed her mother, Gloria, “we intend to take this to the Court of Human Rights,” she asserted. Her daughter, aged 12, is a pupil at Sir James Smith School.
Plans to increase the size of the building site for Bude’s new bowling alley have been given the thumbs down by Bude Town Council.
Kevin Wadland is a very familiar face around Launceston. Along with being on the town council, Kevin spends much of his time conducting interviews and recording talks, all for the benefit of patients at Derriford Hospital, something Kevin has done for 18 years, last Saturday, January 20.
A Bude surfer has been selected to represent England at the most prestigious competition within the sport. Simon Hammond, who was born and bred in Bude is to represent the country in the World Surf Kayak Championships, held in Santa Cruz, California in March.

Last week saw Lewannick Amateur Dramatic Society’s 37th annual pantomime in the village hall, played by a much reduced but very dedicated cast. “Puss in Boots” was written by Peter Randall and well-produced by Jenny Eno in her first as producer.
Launceston Young Farmers’ Club members Sharon, David Thomas, Richard Notley and Andrew Davey, attended St Mary’s Church on Plough Sunday for a service led by vicar Rev Robert.
Three Methodist circuits in the Okehampton area may merge, to make the best use of ministers and lay people, as one option to safeguard and expand the work of the church.

January 24, 1976
Mr Claude Davey, a senior enrolled nurse, retired this week after about 30 years’ service at St Mary’s Hospital, Launceston. A presentation was made to him by Nursing Officer Mrs E Morris.
Mrs Pritchard made the cake for Boscastle WI’s 30th birthday party and it was cut by Miss Fountain, who has been a member for many years.
An attempt by volunteer firemen at Bude, led by Station Officer Ken Sparkes, to recover two ancient sand barges from the thick mud bed of the Bude canal was only party successful. Bude Sub Aqua Club will now become involved in recovering the barges.
A new teacher has been appointed to teach infants at Woolsery Primary School. She is Miss Rosemary Granger, from Bristol, who replaces Mrs Wood.
Canon W G Steer has now been Vicar of St Mary Magdalene, Launceston, for 30 years, and thanksgiving for this fact was a feature of the services at the church on Sunday.

Major James C B Lethbridge, of Tregeare, has been elected president of this year’s Royal Cornwall Show.
An announcement by the clerk, Mr F C Dredge, that he had been notified that the Halwill to Bude railway line would be closing on April 16, had an angry reception at the meeting of Bude Stratton Urban Council.
Launceston Rural Council were informed that the Minister of Transport, Mrs Barbara Castle, was adamant in her refusal to grant an application by Mrs M H Taylor for permission to use premises near the Jamaica Inn for a post office and shop.

The number of fully paid up members of Launceston Labour Party had decreased to 121, reported the treasurer, Mr W J Gregory, at the Party’s annual meeting in the Brotherhood Hall. He was reelected as treasurer along with Mr C Harvey, secretary, and Mr J Hughes, chairman.
Despite protests from the Devon County Council and many other local authorities, the rail line from Yelverton to Princetown is to close on March 5 it was announced on Wednesday.
To help meet death duties totalling nearly £5,000,000, which are said to have been demanded by the Exchequer, the Duke of Bedford is to sell 9,000 acres of his estates in Devon and Cornwall. This will include over 40 farms, woodlands, cottages and other property. It will be the largest property sale ever to take place in the West of England.

Two more cases of foot-and-mouth disease have occurred — at St Kew and St Merryn — following the original outbreaks at St Eval Aerodrome and Bodmin Barracks, and there is now a standstill order affecting many parishes.
Rev W T M Burton from Foxdale, Isle of Man, has been appointed as Vicar of Poughill.
Wireless licences are to go up from 10s to £1 per year.
Bude-Stratton Urban Council are faced with the expenditure of £35,000 to make safe the Tamar Lake Reservoir dam — or with building a new reservoir at a cost of up to £60,000. They have decided on the latter course, but before deciding on the new site are to meet Ministry and County officials to see if they would wish to take surplus water from the reservoir.

January 25, 1936
The death of King George V on Monday has evoked worldwide sympathy. It was only on Friday that the nation had the first intimation that his health called for any anxiety but frequent bulletins then gave details. The last, on Monday evening, ran “The King’s life is moving peacefully towards its close”. The accession of the new King, Edward VIII, was proclaimed on Wednesday with traditional ceremony. At Launceston it was read from the Guildhall steps to a large crowd by the Mayor (Ald S Robbins) and the colourful scene was repeated at Southgate, Northgate, Newport and St Stephens.
The North Cornwall Labour Party have selected Mr D C N Wackley of Plymouth as their prospective candidate at the next election. His father is a native of Poughill.
Extensively damaged by lightning last February, Week St Mary Church has been restored at a cost of £1,600 and on Thursday a service of blessing was conducted by the Bishop of Truro, Dr J W Hunkin.

A scheme to extend the branch railway from Kelly Bray to Altarnun, starting first with a goods and mineral service and developing later on to a passenger services, was described by Mr W C Foxlee, MOCE, at a meeting in the Men’s Institute, Kelly Bray, on Thursday.
Capt M R Dudgeon, MFH, presided at the second annual dinner of the Tetcott Hunt held at the Tree Hotel, Stratton, on Wednesday.
