A TRULY wonderful time was had by all who attended the 1940s Afternoon Tea Dance for the Royal British Legion and the Royal Naval Association at the Falcon Hotel, Bude.
A total of £420 was raised, which will be shared between the two Bude branches of these charities.
It was like being back in time at the event — uniformed girls dancing together to the sounds of Steve Tucker All Star Jazz Band playing tunes of the era; nippy waitresses serving copious amounts of tea and coffee with corned beef sandwiches and Victoria sponge.
Even the menu was a copy of an original ration book explaining the food, which included ANZAC biscuits and Planters Peanuts. Why peanuts? In August 1944, a US supplies ship was torpedoed off of Trevose Head. The supplies of cigarettes, Hershey Bars and Planters Peanuts were washed up on Bude beaches.
