AN EVENING of murder, mystery and intrigue unfolded as many people filled St Breward village hall to hear the true story of a murder that took place in 1840 on the road between Bodmin and Wadebridge.
A merchant from Sladesbridge, Nevell Norway, who was the great great grandfather of the famous novelist Nevil Shute, was robbed and brutally beaten dying at the scene, and two local brothers, William and James Lightfoot, were tried and both hanged for the murder. But were they guilty?
Chris Batters, a well known local film maker, has made a film 'The Murder of Nevell Norway' and his wife Jill has written a book 'From the Vision to the Noose' about the case which throws up some doubts about the convictions.
