WITH Argyle's first team game postponed Jade Tregale, Rhianne Parsons, Aimee Barnes, Vicky Barter and Chloe Roberts turned out for the Reserves in this Pat Sowden Trophy first round tie, writes Liam Dart.
Twenty minutes of the first half with the wind behind them led to Argyle winning this match!
Both teams started brightly but once Parsons of Argyle got a grip of the game it was one way traffic. Only the defending of Chelle Bowden, Sharon Medland, Sarah Guymer, Louisa Crick and Fiona Stevenson, and goalkeeping of Nicola Pike kept them at bay along with the machine in front of them Jess Shirley who at times overtook her own shadow!
Argyle eventually took the lead on ten minutes through a well taken Parsons strike, and it was Parsons who increased the lead from the spot following a foul by Pike. Pike then made two 1-on-1 saves to deny Roberts and Parsons.
The third goal came on 25 minutes when Parsons went through, Pike saved her strike pushing it onto the post, only for Roberts to follow up and sneak the ball through the legs of Guymer despite her best efforts.
Launceston came into the game and created five chances. Jill Haines flashed one across goal, Lucy Bounsall just miscontrolled when through on goal, Shirley forced Tregale into a save, Haines had Tregale at full stretch following a O'keefe tee up just before the break and Ria Tilley saw a shot go just wide.
In the second half it was a much more workman like Launceston with every player working tirelessly. Half time sub Vicky Pett made an instant impact breaking up the play and supporting Shirley alongside Bounsall who got stuck in, in midfield. Margrett Brimacombe entered what had become a battle on a deteriorating pitch and and provided more steel up front.
Chances were limited but Pike had to save smartly from Roberts and Parsons. At the other end Pett tested Tregale, as did Haines, Brimacombe and Bounsall.
Bounsall was forced off through injury Amy Hooper came on and continued the good work at the back alongside Bowden, and Guymer.
If Launceston had applied themselves in the first half as they did in the second then things may have been different, however, they can take pride and spirit with the way they did compete against a strong Argyle side. In the league game in two weeks times I'm sure it will be very much a different game! Next week Launceston are away to unbeaten St Agnes in the County Cup, and are definitely without captain Jess Shirley which will be a massive loss.
In the Cornwall League on Sunday St Breward lost 3-2 at Roche in Division One whilst the Callington v Camelford Division Two fixture was postponed.
