Carole Ann Barr, of Westcliff Heights, Teignmouth, writes:
I was surprised to read (Teignmouth Post, June 12) that Mr Rodwell feels that the replacement for the Carlton Theatre is 'monstrous'.
He must have a short memory, as I would have said that the old Carlton Theatre was little more than a corrugated shed and was not at all attractive or fit for purpose.
What is being built will be an attractive state-of-the-art theatre and arts centre. The new building went through a very transparent planning process and the opportunity was given at this stage for the local community to comment on the proposal.
Of course it is not attractive at the moment; it is under construction. I work in the local community and have discussed the new building with my clients, friends and local people and we all feel that it will be a beautiful building and will enhance Teignmouth.
Mr Rodwell should look at most successful modern towns and cities and see how historical buildings stand side by side with modern architecture.
Teignmouth has to compete with many other seaside towns in the south west and we need to attract visitors to the town, along with satisfying the needs of the local community; this new building will be a welcome addition to the town's landscape.
