THE Camelford Walkers met for the first time on Thursday, October 20, in the Old Bank, Camelford’s new community hub growing in the old NatWest Bank building in Market Place.

Under the slogan ‘putting your best foot forward’, ten people attended, with others planning to join the group later.

Talking over a cup of tea it was revealed that some had always loved walking, but others were recent converts — some were long-distance walkers while others were dog-walkers, and walkers for the wildlife.

Several members had experience of leading walks for others but all who attended simply wanted to enjoy walking with others, and to encourage others to join in.

The group agreed they would hold a meeting every week, although there may be some variation in day and time to suit members. Well-behaved dogs will also be welcome to accompany members.

The aims of the group are to meet others, to improve mental and physical health, to keep Camelford’s footpaths open, and to enjoy the outdoors.

The local surgery is encouraging people to join the group, as regular walking has been shown to help weight loss, improve low mood and even to reduce medication use. If anyone is interested in joining the walking group contact Helen Wood on 01840 212161 or e-mail [email protected] for more information.

The costs are to support the community project. It is £1 to join the walk plus £1 for refreshments back at the Old Bank.
