A RECENTLY reinstalled bench at a location in Holsworthy has been dedicated in honour of those who fought in World War II.

A bench at the top of Glebelands in the town became increasingly in disrepair while two local authorities couldn’t agree who owned the actual bench and the land it stood on, prompting Holsworthy Town Council to step in and sort it out themselves.

In the place of the previously derelict public amenity is a new memorial bench, which to coincide with events around Remembrance and Armistice days was dedicated to mark the 80th anniversary of VJ (Victory in Japan) day, which took place earlier in 2025.

The dedication came after work from councillors and volunteers made the area surrounding Holsworthy’s newest memorial bench look tidier, including planting and the covering over of graffiti.

Cllr Jon Hutchings, the mayor of Holsworthy said: “Many of you would have seen our new memorial Bench which has replaced a rather sorry looking bench at the the top of Glebelands. This was a result of a lot of frustrating work to find out who owned the actual bench and the land it stood on.

“None of our higher authorities could agree on ownership so the council agreed to replace the bench. With the help of our friends at Academic Facilities Services the bench has been replaced and dedicated to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VJ which was earlier this year.

“The area has had a real spruce up with planter, the planting of bulbs and the graffiti covered over. Many thanks to Cllr Burt Cole and the volunteers including Louis Devitt and Robin.

“As all the work has now been completed we thought that today being the day of remembering was a good time to dedicate the bench.”
