A RECENTLY re-opened Holsworthy nursing home treated its residents to a Shrove Tuesday with a difference – holding its inaugural ‘pancake day race’.
The long corridors of Deer Park Nursing Home, which was re-opened in October 2025 after a refurbishment by Camelot Care with a maximum capacity of 25 residents, was the venue for the event, which saw residents being pushed down the corridor in wheelchairs by staff while flipping the pancakes.
At a time where sporting action is in an abundance with the Winter Olympics dominating the airwaves, the activities that marked the start of Lent in Holsworthy’s nursing home could be considered a winter sport in its own right with the weather outside lending itself to the ‘winter feel’.
However, in lieu of medals, with the start of Lent marking the starting pistol for the countdown to Easter, the winning resident was presented with a ‘yummy chocolate prize’.
Resident Andy O’Brien was the winner of the aforementioned chocolate prize with a time of 12.5 seconds.
After the event, all the residents in the nursing home were treated to a smorgasbord of options in the form of savoury pancakes to mark Shrove Tuesday, with the salmon and cream cheese ones proving particularly popular.
Alyce Barber, activities coordinator at Deer Park Nursing Home, said: "This was our inaugural pancake race and we had a great time!
"Residents were flipping their pancakes as they were pushed down the corridor in wheelchairs. The race took the form of a time-trial, with a yummy chocolate prize for the winner.
"Andy O'Brien won the race, covering the length of the corridor in an impressive time of 12.5 seconds. He was very pleased with his achievement.
"Afterwards we rang the changes by offering some delicious savoury pancakes for supper. The salmon and cream cheese ones were very popular!"
