THE Mayor and Mayoress of Launceston, Cllr and Mrs Paul and Rosemary O'Brien, officially opened the latest stage of the building improvement work being undertaken at St Stephens School, Launceston.

A new classroom for Year 5 pupils has been recently completed after six months of construction. The learning environment of the school has been greatly improved by this latest phase of work.

The new classroom block contains a disabled toilet, a large resources store and the new teaching room itself. It is connected to the rest of the school by a wide glass corridor.

Year 5 pupils are thrilled to be at last working in their new learning space, and the headteacher Will Hermon said he was very pleased with the completed building.

"The creation of a fresh, purpose built learning space is a wonderful addition to the school and will help us to provide learners with an even more engaging and purposeful learning experience."

An assembly was held for the whole school at which a slide show charting the development of the new block was shown. Special visitors, headteachers from local schools and St Stephens governors who had been involved with the project went along to see the finished space. All agreed the new class was light, bright and cheerful.

The classroom construction was funded by the school in partnership with the Local Authority. Further phases of improvements to the school building are planned for the summer term.
