LOTS of fun was had wearing colourful socks at Hi-5Talktime’s pop up café at the Sensory Room in Bude recently, celebrating awareness of World Downs Syndrome Day.

In an hour and a half, £30 was raised for the cause, and thanks have been extended to all who donated and enjoyed Helen’s lovely chocolate cake and a cuppa!

One unsuspecting workman passing by was asked: “Excuse me, do you have fancy socks on in those boots?” He did indeed; he must have known.

The group — Hi-5Talktime — has been set up by a trio of nannas all of whom have either lost special needs children or are looking after a Downs Syndrome orphaned grandson.

It was set up in January after the ladies felt there was a need for a group of this kind, one which they would have wanted themselves years ago.

The group is aimed at parents, grandparents and carers of under fives, for advice, support and a place to share information. Homemade cakes are also available!

One of the ladies, Carolyn Slingsby said some families slip under the net and have to fight for support, but this self-funded pop up cafe environment aims to fill that gap.

Carolyn said: "It’s so needed. It’s there for anyone with children under five with special needs. It’s just a bit of support for them."

The group is not just for the Bude community — anyone can attend. It is hoped that the group will have visits from people, such as a lady who can help teach makaton sign language.

The recent event was held to raise awareness of World Downs Syndrome Day, and also of the group.

A spokesperson said: “Thanks to all families and people who came along to ensure this was a fun time.”

Several of the parents commented on how much their children had enjoyed the event, and there were even two young mums who said they would travel from Okehampton and Launceston to attend the next event.

The spokesperson added: “It is not just about the tea and lovely homemade cake; it is a time to talk, time for themselves, and time for picking up helpful information and swapping experiences and stories.”

The group meets on Tuesdays from 10.30am to 11.30am at The Sensory Room, Belle View Lane, Bude.
