IN 2016, less than half of people who signed up to give blood in January actually went on to donate. NHS Blood and Transplant is therefore encouraging new donors in Launceston to book their first appointment.

Giving up just one hour could save or improve up to three lives.

NHS Blood and Transplant always needs first time donors to replace those who can’t donate any more, and to ensure the correct mix of blood groups is provided to meet patient needs. This can help ensure that patients have access to the blood they need, when they need it.

More than half of the registered donors are aged over 45, so NHS Blood and Transplant is keen to see the recruitment of younger people to donate blood now and in the years to come.

NHS Blood and Transplant needs donors from all blood groups and communities, but is particularly looking for new donors from black and Asian communities, and donors with the universal blood group O negative, as well as from groups A negative, B negative and AB negative. There is no reason to worry if people are unsure of their blood group before donating.

People in Launceston will be able to give blood on Monday, February 13 at Launceston Rugby Club at Polson Bridge, Launceston, from 1.10pm to 3.30pm, and 4.30pm to 7pm.
