'OVERWHELMING' support has been given for a Morrisons store in Launceston.
Over 500 people attended a public consultation for a multi-million pound scheme held on Wednesday, May 23 and Thursday, May 24.
The applicant, Development Securities and Wessex Investors (DSW), seeks to build a mixed-use development of homes, shops and businesses next to the Link Road, near Launceston Hospital and Medical Centre sites.
The supermarket would be a 'store of the future', one of the first in Cornwall. The site would consist of a petrol filling station; Marston's family pub and restaurant; Premier Inn hotel; a drive-through restaurant and coffee shop; up to 275 new homes, including affordable properties; commercial area and a public open space.
Around 350 jobs could be generated, the majority for local people living within a three mile radius.
"It has been overwhelmingly positive," said a spokesperson from Morrisons, who explained that people had already been asking for job applications.
Many expressed their support for a Morrisons store, but the need for a bigger hospital and medical centre was raised.
